I am ready to hear your story, so that you can heal and move forwards.

Counsellor - Hamilton Sargent

My Pronouns:

I am passionate about empowering you to navigate and heal from challenging relationships with self and others.

Relationships can be nurturing and supportive, but can also be painful and destructive. Therapy may help you to understand your own experience of this and find ways to move forwards.

I understand that relationships come in many forms, and recognise the many oppressions that exist in society.

I am passionate about inclusivity, and will celebrate your unique, diverse identities, relationships and lived experiences. I offer LGBTQIA+ affirmative, anti-racist, anti-oppressive relationships with all my clients.

Prior to training as a therapist, I worked within the corporate world and performing arts industries.

Back then, I was aware of the impact of both these environments on mental health, along with the pressures and challenges of living as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

My own experience of therapy showed me its power.

This had a profound impact on me and how I related to others. It was a life changing experience, and I decided I wanted to help others to live the life they wish to lead.

I will hold a safe, supportive space for you where we can find meaning within your unique experiences.

Together we will untangle your experiences, and harnessing your inner resources, help you to develop greater self awareness, experience less distress, and live a freer and happier life based on your own values.

We will identify what is useful and helpful for you, tailoring your therapy and making it as unique as you are!

We will go at your pace, approaching your challenges in ways that work for you. It can be a space to talk, be creative and find new ways to express yourself. We will regularly check in and adjust our approach when needed.

In terms of my theoretical approach I would describe myself as a person-centred pluralistic counsellor.

But what does that mean? Well, there are three different aspects to this and I will take you through them briefly.

Person-centred counselling was founded by Carl Rogers in the 1940's and has an extensive evidence and theoretical base. Revolutionary at the time compared with other approaches, Rogers places you as the client as the expert of your world (rather than the therapist), believing that you have all the resources that you need to flourish within you. He believed that empathy, authenticity and acceptance within therapy can support this tendency and challenge conditioning from others and society that may have gotten in the way of this, in turn lessening distress that you may be experiencing. Considering this, my approach is to offer you a safe and accepting space where we can explore your world in the way you experience it, disentangling your challenges together, finding ways forwards that makes sense to you and supporting you to live a life based on your own values.

Pluralistic counselling is founded on the principles that 'different clients may find different things helpful at different times' and that if, as therapists, we want to know what is best for our clients we should talk to you about this. This is a newer modality but has a growing and exciting evidence base emerging. My approach therefore, is to tailor your therapy around your unique preferences, discussing this with you on a consistent basis alongside open and transparent dialogue around how you are experiencing your therapy and your relationship with me on a continual basis so we can support you to get the most out of it.
